This module (planet.ad) is accompanied by a MIDI music
file (planet.mid), which should be copied into the \music
subirectory under the main After Dark directory.
Planet.mid is sequenced for General MIDI (GM), and as
such plays with Basic, Extended or Full MIDI setups
selected from the MIDI Mapper in the Windows Control Panel.
Channels 1 - 10 contain the GM Extended tracks, channels
13-16 contain the GM Basic tracks, and all the channels
(1-16) can be set to play for "All" GM rendition.
Planet.mid was very carefully scored to be as faithful
a MIDI representation of Gustav Holst's "MARS" from his
suite "The Planets" as possible. Therefore, the better
the MIDI setup used, the more "realistic" it will sound.
If an external MIDI synth with General MIDI capabilities
is available, and a sound card with MIDI out capabilites
(or a MIDI interface card) is present, the music will
sound the best if the MIDI Mapper is set to "MIDI Out",
("All MIDI or Ext MIDI"),and the music played through the
External Synthesizer, with all 16 channels being used.
If Planet.mid is to be played though a Sound Card in the
PC (such as a Sound Blaster), the music will sound the
richest with the MIDI Mapper set for "All FM" (channels
1-16), excellent set for "Ext FM" (channels 1-10),
and 'acceptable' set for "Basic FM" (channels 13-16).
It is my hope that this music can be heard under the
best conditions (I think you will enjoy it!)...hence this
note.
Thanks and enjoy!
